Mc이 뜻하는 것은

예전에 학교 선배가 맥이 `누구의 아들'이라는 뜻이라고 말한 기억이 나서 구글질을 했고, 그래서 아래의 글을 찾았다.

질문: Well, i found that there are  english words with prefix or suffix, such as McDonald, O'brian, kingston,... Can someone please explain them about them? what do they mean?

답1: The prefixes Mac or Mc in many Scottish or Irish names comes from the Gaelic word ``mac'' which meant ``son of'' so McDonald means ``son of Donald''  etc.

답2: The O' prefix has a similar meaning. In Gaelic it meant ``descendant of '' so O'Brian would mean ``descendant of Brian.'' 

답3: The -ton suffix means ``town" and is of English origin. So, Kinston would mean ``the  King's town.'' Princeton would mean ...

일전에 도은이아버님이 `개드립'의 어원이 ``ad libitum''이라고 말씀해 주셨는데, 영어 사전에는 ``without advance preparation''이라고 나와 있다. 내가 기억하는 ``ad''는 ``at'' 또는 ``to''를 의미하므로 좀 더 정확한 뜻을 알고 싶었다. 위키피디아는 이렇게 설명한다.

Ad libitum is Latin for "at [one's] pleasure"; it is often shortened to "ad lib" (as an adjective or adverb) or "ad-lib" (as a verb or noun).

재미있는 것은 매킨토시가 ``비옷''이라는 뜻도 갖고 있다는 것이다.
