open compound란 무엇인가? "school bus"처럼 간격이 들어가는 합성어를 말한다.
the post--World War II years에서 "World War II"가 합성어이다. 여기에 post를 붙일 때 하이픈이 아니라 엔대시를 쓰는 것이다. 그리고 한정 형용사에서만 쓰이는 것도 눈여겨 보아야 한다. 예외 없는 규칙이 없는 법이니 아래의 경우에는 하이픈을 쓰니 주의해야 한다.
