Appendices normally come after the main text and are often considered to be part of the \mainmatter as they are normally numbered (the \backmatter declaration turns off all sectional numbering). --- The Memoir Class, p78

시카고 매뉴얼은 부록이 back matter에 들어간다고 보고, 메므와는 main matter에 들어간다고 본다. 절 번호가 필요하지 않다면 back matter에 넣으란다. 이 무슨 기계적인 발상인가? 그러나 이것은 "비가시적인" 문제이므로 중요하지 않다. 어느 쪽에 넣으냐보다 부록이 chapter 단위를 부여할 만한 지위를 갖느냐가 더 큰 문제이다.

부록 자체를 나는 좋아하지 않는다. 중요하지 않다면 빼버리지 왜 굳이 넣는가? 그렇지만 일이란 게 내 뜻대로만 되지 않는다. 

제1장, 제2장, ... 부록 A, 부록 B, ...
1, 2, ... A, B, ...

아무튼 요즘에는 Chapter, Appendix를 명시하지 않는 추세이다.
